The Spyro series has introduced new characters over the years, many of whom have made appearances in later games. The only returning main characters from the original game are Spyro, the protagonist, and Sparx, his loyal dragonfly sidekick. Each level also has a power-up gate that can be unlocked by defeating a specific number of enemies, giving Spyro a temporary super-ability.

The game features various ways to explore its world, such as swimming underwater to find treasure and hidden tunnels, climbing certain surfaces, and performing an overhead smashing attack using the headbash. Moneybags, a character in the game, teaches Spyro three new abilities throughout the course of the game.

Gems gathered during play are required to pay fees charged by Moneybags to progress through the game. These orbs can be used to open portals to certain levels or access hidden areas. Each level also contains a set number of orbs that can be earned by completing secondary tasks for NPCs, such as lighting lamps or protecting characters from attacks.

To progress through the first two hub worlds, players must acquire a talisman from each realm, which is awarded for reaching the end of the level and defeating the boss of each world. The game is divided into three main hub worlds containing portals to various realms. Bottled butterflies not only restore Sparx's health but also give Spyro an extra life.

Players control Spyro as he battles against enemies and obstacles using his flame breath, charge attack, and glide abilities. With its engaging gameplay and exciting story, Spyro for PlayStation 2 is a must-play adventure for fans of the series and platformer enthusiasts alike.
